MCA Speaker Series - The Innocence Project

Larry Golden, a member of MCA, is involved with the Innocence Project. In fact, since 1989, 2805 wrongfully convicted defendants have been exonerated (proved to have been actually innocent) and released from prison. Of that number, 132 had been on death row when exonerated.

Two such persons who were on death row were Sonia "Sunny" Jacobs and Peter Pringle.   Sunny and her husband Jesse were convicted in 1976 of murdering two police officers in the state of Florida. Both were initially sentenced to be executed and Jesse was executed. Sunny's sentence was later commuted to life without the right of parole. In 1992, Sunny was released from prison after the Circuit Court of Appeals determined, based upon new evidence, including a confession by the actual killer, that she and Jesse were actually innocent.

This Zoom program focuses on Sunny, who will tell her fascinating story and then answer questions. Of significance to MCA, Sunny  is Jewish. She noted that this would give her an opportunity to talk about the Jewish aspects of her story, something she rarely has had a chance to talk about in the virtually hundreds of programs she has done around the world.

Bess Myerson: the One and Only Jewish Miss America

In September 1945, Bess Myerson, Miss New York City, made history at the most famous beauty pageant in the world. In spite of anonymous phone calls to judges, threats from sponsors, and growing anti-Semitism, the daughter of struggling immigrants from Russia became the first Jewish Miss America. The judges could not change the point count: the beauty queen from the Bronx won the swimsuit competition, tied for first place in talent, and was top-ranked in interviews and evening wear. But was the country ready for a Jewish Miss America?

“The One and Only Jewish Miss America” is the surprising story of Bess, her parents and sisters, and the Sholom Aleichem housing project that shaped so many Jewish families starting out in the United States.

You'll have to make your way through twelve years sheltered from the world. You take solace in educating yourself and earn five degrees. You're assigned to an Ohio parish to be their priest: a young man with little experience expected to shepherd his flock. Keep imagining: you make the difficult decision to leave the priesthood. Lucky for you, there's a "nice Jewish girl" to help you along; you embrace a Jewish lifestyle. Then one day, your family picks up, leaves everything familiar and heads off to a rural village in southern Turkey: you and your wife (WCA member and writer, Karyn), and your eight-year-old son will live there for three years: they are "strangers in a strange land." Now an award-winner mystery writer, Richard enjoys living life vicariously through the motley crew of characters in his award-winning crime novels.

A newly created video recording eerily connects works of fiction with real events associated with structural failures; in one instance, the “failure” of a fictional airliner is compared with the failure of the Comet, the first commercial jet aircraft. In addition, the events surrounding the sinking of the fictional Titan passenger liner are compared with the actual catastrophic failure of the Titanic cruise liner.

My Dear Children - Conversation with the Film Maker

A story of Jewish faith, family, and a tragedy that reverberated for generations. The pogroms in the years following the Russian Revolution of 1917 killed tens of thousands of Jews and marked the beginning of the near-obliteration of Jewish life from an area of the world to which nearly 80% of the world's Jewry can trace its roots. Feiga Shamis, a Jewish mother of 12, wrote about those years in a rare first-hand account. What happened drove her to make a choice no mother should ever have to make. But it was a choice that ensured the survival of two of her children. Decades later, Feiga's granddaughter, Judy Favish, set out from South Africa for Poland and Ukraine to try to understand the grandmother she never met, the choice Feiga made, and her father who would never talk about his past
