We Met at Grossinger's
We Met at Grossinger's is the story of Grossinger's, the renowned "Borscht Belt" resort - and the true-to-life inspiration for 1987's Dirty Dancing. The film chronicles the evolution of the small boarding house owned by Austrian Jewish immigrants Asher and Malke Grossinger into Grossinger's, owned by their daughter, Jennie. A pioneering all-inclusive resort, Grossinger's offered all-you-can eat kosher meals, abundant recreation choices, and star-studded nightclub shows to its guests.
Grossinger's and its Borscht Belt competitors offered a taste of the American Dream to Jews, who were unwelcome in "establishment" resorts and clubs. The film chronicles moments like Jackie Robinson's televised interracial hug with Jennie, and the early careers of comics such as Mel Brooks, Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld. It also explores the favorable impact of Borscht Belt resorts on the Catskills economy - at least until air travel, air conditioning, and assimilation opened the door to a world beyond the Catskills.
The film runs 104 Minutes
