MCA Movie Discussion Group
Enjoy eating? Enjoy movies? Enjoy an energetic discussion? Join us for our MCA Film Discussion Group.
Each month, the 'movie selection committee' chooses a movie-of-the month, which all members see at their leisure. Then, we meet at host couples' houses for our discussion and food!
We do try to have a food topic that goes with the movie when possible. Members have enjoyed this idea over the last few years. Some people are extremely creative!
The size of each group is limited, based on the number of couples who can host each month. We usually need 4 or 5 hosts per month. Group size depends on the size of the homes.
As members become more comfortable with the group, we encourage people to volunteer their homes. It is not fair for us to always rely on the same people to host.
If you wish to register but find yourself on the waitlist, please contact Spencer to include you.

The True Story
of
Tamara De Lempicka
&
The Art of Survival
Registration opens 11/5/25
Art Deco icon Tamara de Lempicka was known for decades for her glossy, sensual nudes and fiercely modern portraits. With their sharp angular lines and sensual energy, her powerful female figures defined the aesthetic of the roaring 1920s.
"The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & The Art of Survival" goes behind the facade into the reality of the artist's life. Born Tamara Hurwitz into a life of privilege, her world was shattered by the Russian Revolution. Her family fled to Paris, where art became a tool for her survival and international fame.
Utilizing newly discovered archival evidence, the film reveals her attempts to obscure her Jewish heritage not as socialite pretense but as efforts to protect herself and her family from persecution. The film traces her journey from refugee to international sensation, her departure for the U.S. in 1940 to escape fascism, and her continued self-reinvention as an immigrant and independent woman.
The film (which includes nudes) runs 96 minutes.
Please join us after the film for a Q&A with Director/Producer Julie Rubio and Co-Producer Blake Wellen.

The Road Between Us:
The Ultimate Rescue
Registration opens 12/3/25
The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue
Winner of Best Film -- Toronto International Film Festival 2025
Amir Tibon was home with his family at Kibbutz Nahal Oz, less than a mile from the Gaza border. His father, retired IDF General Noam Tibon, was some 55 miles away in Tel Aviv. Amir and his family heard Hamas attackers approaching, and reached out to his father. The retired general, sensing that nobody was attempting to protect the beseiged citizens, set out to save his family. The Road Between Us is a moving account of his self-appointed mission. The story makes us contemplate what we would do if our loved ones faced immediate danger.
Using original footage from the cell-phones of victims, the body-cams of invaders and a variety of drones, the film shows General Tibon's strict military ethic. He selflessly tends to others on the road who were injured by the Oct. 7 attacks. The general and his wife interrupt their direct drive to save a couple that had escaped the music festival massacre by hiding on the side of the road in a pile of leaves. Tibon also assists a group of very young soldiers who had been injured in an ambush. The general pulls together a pick-up squad of soldiers along the way, reaches the kibbutz, and goes house to house - methodically clearing out Hamas militants and ultimately liberating his family.
The film runs 93 minutes

America’s Opioid Epidemic
How Big Pharma’s Profit Motive fueled Opioid Addiction and Overdose Deaths and how the Justice System Worked to Abate the Epidemic
Much has been written about the Sacklers’ and Purdue Pharma’s development and false marketing of oxycontin that fueled the opioid epidemic in our country. At its height, the epidemic killed more than 175,000 people annually and afflicted more than 3 million people with opioid use disorder. But the epidemic was caused not just by the Sacklers’ illegal conduct but was reinforced by other opioid manufacturers and the drug distributors and pharmacy dispensers who ignored their obligations under the Federal Drug Enforcement Act.
Lawyers representing more than 3000 cities and counties, in conjunction with state attorney generals, brought lawsuits that have resulted in more than $70 billion in settlements earmarked for addiction treatment centers, foster care facilities, drug courts, and drug law enforcement agencies. They have paid for the wide dissemination of overdose antidote drugs such as Narcan and opioid treatment drugs such as suboxone. The lawsuits have also required that the entire drug distribution chain change its behavior.
Recent reports reveal that these programs, funded by the settlements, have reduced opioid related deaths by more than 30% in 2024.
Pete Weinberger was appointed by the Federal Judge who managed these lawsuits as one of the lead litigators. He will detail how the case was litigated, how his litigation team was established and funded, and the evidence that was uncovered. That evidence is now documented in a national archive so that researchers and scholars can learn and report about how this man-made epidemic developed.

Safeguarding our Nations Future
This discussion will cover the significant threats facing our nation and highlight why it is crucial to understand the nature of these threats and their potential impact on our security and stability. External threats from countries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea pose a serious challenge to our national security, with aggressive behavior in military, cyber, and economic realms necessitating a comprehensive strategy including diplomatic efforts, economic sanctions, and military deterrence. Additionally, terrorist groups, both domestic and international, utilize propaganda, recruitment, and cyber tactics to threaten critical infrastructure and government institutions, requiring enhanced cybersecurity measures and international collaboration. Internal threats such as the national debt and political polarization further undermine our security, with fiscal responsibility, budget reforms, and bipartisan solutions essential to safeguarding our nation's future. The General will offer some thoughts on how we should collectively move forward.
Keith Brian Alexander is a retired four-star general of the United State Army, who served as Director of the National Security Agency, Chief of the Central Security Service, and Commander of the United States Cyber Command. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff, G-2 (Intelligence), United States Army from 2003 to 2005. He assumed the positions of Director of the National Security Agency, and Chief of the Central Security Service on 1 August 2005, and the additional duties as Commander United States Cyber Command on 21 May 2010.

Beatlemania Comes to Naples: Live with The Fab Three
After more than six decades following their meteoric rise to fame in the early 1960’s, The Beatles remain as one of the most popular, if not the most popular, rock and roll bands in history. Even after all this time, their music is still widely played all over the world. Beatles tribute bands number in the hundreds, and in 2028 a four-part biopic on the Fab Four will appear in theaters. It seems their popularity only continues to grow with time. Come take a walk down Memory Lane as our own Ken Brown, Frank Muller, and Randy Solomon offer a live retrospective of Beatles hits over the years, complete with back stories of each song. This promises to be a crowd pleasing performance that all will enjoy.
Our Fab Three includes Ken Brown, Frank Muller and Randy Solomon who are members of the Alta Rockers Band, and have each been playing Beatles tunes for as long as they can remember.

Keewaydin
Island Adventure
Registration opens 1/30/26
Travel by boat to Keewaydin Island – a beautiful barrier island between Naples and Marco Island – accessible only by boat. There you will be able to take that long romantic walk on the beach that you’ve dreamed about; lounge in the sun; play beach games; or even bring your fishing gear. Or, you can simply relax under a beach umbrella with a refreshing beverage and watch the waves. Our route takes us past the inlets of Port Royal, which could be a side trip if desired.
We get to Keewaydin Island by rental boats and private boats. In prior years, several dozen MCA members and spouses participated, so this is a real beachapalooza! It’s a terrific outing! Boating experience is not required... nor is beach experience.
For those who do not have access to a private boat, we rent 12 person pontoon boats at the Naples Marina at Bayfront (Goodlette and 41). The cost of the rental boats is $50/person. Boat rental fees are refundable only up to March 20th, or on March 29th due to inclement weather. If you have no boating experience, we have enough MCA members with boat captain experience, so you can just relax as a passenger and enjoy the trip.
Please note: We will be monitoring Red Tide and we may need to cancel if levels are high in the area on the day of the trip.
