Janis Ian:
Breaking Silence
Movie Starts 1:30pm
Doors Open 1:00pm
In the mid-60s, Janis Ian, a tiny teenage Jewish singer-songwriter from New Jersey scores a controversial hit single called "Society's Child," about an interracial love relationship. The song launches her illustrious career but also ignites death threats, plunging her into an emotional tailspin--only to emerge from the ashes in the 1970s with an even bigger hit, "At Seventeen," a masterful take on adolescent pain and alienation. Janis overcomes a host of obstacles to find love and to produce an indelible body of searingly honest songs that earn her a devoted following and critical acclaim.
The film chronicles Janis Ian's remarkable journey from her teenage involvement in the Greenwich Village folk scene, to her climb to stardom in the 1970s, her financial difficulties in the 1980s, and then her reinvention as a songwriter and advocate for LBGTQ+ rights, after which she returned to singing, while continuing to create candid lyrics and tackling difficult subjects.
A host of legendary performers, including Lily Tomlin, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, and Jean Smart are also featured in the film.
